SOMMERAKADEMIE-Workshop: Billy Barry - GAGA DANCERS + Movement, Emotions and Phrase Work

13–15 July 2026, 10 am–1 pm

This workshop begins with the Gaga Dancers movement practice and then explores Billy’s creative process regarding what motivates movement invention and what deepens it once discovered. Throwing fear and judgment out of the window as improvisers and recognizing habits, we can explore how physical tasks, fantasies and/or emotional states can expand our experience of movement invention. Once discovered we will dive into moments from Billy’s repertory to explore these ideas inside of choreographed material and phrase work.

Billy Barry

was born in New York in 1989. He trained at The Ailey School from 2003 - 2007 and performed with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre in 2006. Billy continued training and graduated from The Juilliard School in 2011. During his time at Juilliard, he performed with Gallim Dance and Keigwin + Co. He was part of the original cast of Gallim’s “Wonderland” at The Joyce Theatre in 2010. He joined the Batsheva Ensemble in 2011 and Batsheva Dance Company in 2012. In 2022, he was appointed Assistant Rehearsal Director of Batsheva Dance Company while still dancing until leaving the company in 2024. He was the recipient of the Yair Shapira Award for dance excellence in 2019. As a choreographer, Billy has created several short works, both contemporary and commercial. In 2022, Billy and Gianni Notarnicola began creating together, developing a movement language and style of their own. The two have since premiered two duets (B.O.A.T.S, based on a true story and G.O.A.T.S, going on a trip, sis) that have performed in Varda Hall, Suzanne Dellal Hall, Tmuna Theatre, Habait Theatre, Tanzfaktur Koln, Rotterdam, Chez Bushwick NY, Taipei and throughout Italy. In 2023, Billy choreographed solo works on himself and others (PETER- a story ballet, DansHer) as well as a trio (B THIGH STAR) that have performed at the CCA Tel Aviv-Yafo, Inbal Theatre and The Juilliard School. Since leaving Batsheva Dance Company, he has guested with Gallim Dance and Ate9. In 2025, he was the assistant choreographer to Imre and Marne VanOpstal for FKA Twigs’ Eusexua tour.

In each workshop, participants work intensively over the course of 3 days with one of the artists.

SOMMERAKADEMIE

The TanzFaktur SommerAkademie - Cologne's international festival for contemporary dance - takes place every year in mid-July. The large-scale two-week festival is a platform for high-calibre national and international artists, projects and collectives.

In addition to the performances, workshops for professionals and dance enthusiasts offer opportunities for dialogue between dance professionals and the audience.

Dieser Workshop beginnt mit der Gaga-Dancers Bewegungspraxis und erforscht anschließend Billys kreativen Prozess im Hinblick darauf, was die Entstehung von Bewegung motiviert und was sie vertieft, sobald sie entdeckt wurde. Indem wir als Improvisierende Angst und Bewertung loslassen und eigene Gewohnheiten erkennen, können wir untersuchen, wie körperliche Aufgaben, Fantasien und/oder emotionale Zustände unsere Erfahrung von Bewegungsentwicklung erweitern.

Anschließend tauchen wir in Ausschnitte aus Billys Repertoire ein, um diese Ideen innerhalb von choreografischem Material und Bewegungsphrasen weiter zu erforschen.

Billy Barry

wurde 1989 in New York geboren. Er absolvierte seine Ausbildung an der The Ailey School von 2003 bis 2007 und tanzte 2006 mit dem Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre. Billy setzte seine Ausbildung fort und schloss 2011 sein Studium an der The Juilliard School ab. Während seiner Zeit an der Juilliard School arbeitete er mit Gallim Dance und Keigwin + Co. Er war Teil der Originalbesetzung von Gallims „Wonderland“ am Joyce Theatre im Jahr 2010. 2011 trat er dem Batsheva Ensemble bei und wurde 2012 Mitglied der Batsheva Dance Company. 2022 wurde er zum Assistant Rehearsal Director der Batsheva Dance Company ernannt, während er weiterhin tanzte, bis er die Kompanie 2024 verließ. 2019 erhielt er den Yair Shapira Award für herausragende Leistungen im Tanz.

Als Choreograf hat Billy mehrere kurze Arbeiten geschaffen, sowohl im zeitgenössischen als auch im kommerziellen Bereich. 2022 begannen Billy und Gianni Notarnicola gemeinsam zu arbeiten und entwickelten dabei eine eigene Bewegungssprache und einen gemeinsamen Stil. Seitdem haben die beiden zwei Duette uraufgeführt (B.O.A.T.S – based on a true story und G.O.A.T.S – going on a trip, sis), die unter anderem im Varda Hall, im Suzanne Dellal Hall, im Tmuna Theatre, im Habait Theatre, in der Tanzfaktur Köln, in Rotterdam, bei Chez Bushwick New York, in Taipei sowie in ganz Italien gezeigt wurden.

Seit seinem Weggang von der Batsheva Dance Company gastierte er bei Gallim Dance und Ate9. 2025 war er Assistant Choreographer von Imre und Marne Van Opstal für die Eusexua-Tour von FKA Twigs.

SOMMERAKADEMIE

Jedes Jahr findet Mitte Juli die SommerAkademie der TanzFaktur statt – Kölns internationales Festival für zeitgenössischen Tanz. Das groß ausgerichtete zweiwöchige Festival ist eine Plattform für hochkarätige nationale und internationale Künstler*innen, Projekte und Kollektive.

Neben den Performances bieten Workshops für Profis und Tanzinteressierte Möglichkeiten zum Austausch zwischen Tanzschaffenden und Publikum.
