Auf der Insel Sansibar erhebt sich in den 1950er-Jahren eine Unabhängigkeitsbewegung gegen die britische Kolonialherrschaft. Die junge Yasmin wurde von ihrer Familie, die aus Indien stammt, gerade mit einem älteren Mann verheiratet. Sie flieht ins Swahili-Viertel Stone Town, wo sie dem jungen Revolutionär Dengé begegnet. Zwischen beiden erwächst eine verbotene Liebe. VUTA N’KUVUTE ist die Verfilmung des gleichnamigen Swahili-Romans von Adam Shafi. Regisseur Amil Shivji beleuchtet die Jahre des Kampfes gegen die Kolonialmacht und regt zum Nachdenken über Gegenwart und Zukunft an.
