Slow Club und Queers To The Front Booking präsentieren

PROPER.

“This record is a concept album that’s meant to read like a book; every song is a chapter following the protagonist through their 20s. Imagine a queer, Black Holden Caufield-type coming up in the 2010s.”

… is what vocalist Erik Garlington (he/him) says about Proper.´s upcoming new album “The Great American Novel“ (March 2022).

The album will be both lyrically and musically heavy, the former something fans have come to expect from Garlington’s unflinchingly honest lyrical content, but the latter something that’s refreshingly new.

 

Channeling the heavier music Garlington listened to during his adolescence - from post hardcore outfit At the Drive-In to progressive metal band System of a Down - Garlington and the rest of Proper. - bassist Natasha Johnson (she/her) and drummer Elijah Watson (he/they) - push themselves in ways they haven’t before, culminating in an ambitious project that showcases the new sonic territory the band is heading in.



Garlington says: “It all goes back to Black genius and how it’s ingested by the predominantly cishet, white male crowd.

If they’re going to be a voyeur to the Black experience, I wanted to strip away all the cheeky song titles, lyrical inside jokes, and optimistic singalongs.

I want them to hear this record and learn about our identity crises, our aimlessness, how many friends and family we know that are dead or in jail by 25.

How, at eight we were told we were gifted but by 11 we were told we’re dangerous.”

 

Proper. has consistently toured America, The UK, & Europe, performed on late night television on the final season of The Chris Gethard Show, and played alongside Pedro The Lion, The Get Up Kids, and more at SXSW 2019.

Ja sorry, die Limousine zur Abholung hatte heute Morgen ‘ne Parkkralle dran. Auch der Nieselregen, die traurige, eingestaubte Plastikpalme im fensterlosen Bad, dass kein Champus kaltgestellt ist… das alles wirkt jetzt erstmal nicht so fancy, ok ok!

Aber da du jetzt schon mal hier bist – hi na setz dich, da unter dem 90er- Jahre-Bandshirt-Haufen ist irgendwo ein Sessel.

Die Kräuterbaguettes brauchen noch so fünf Minuten, trinkst du lieber Flasche oder Dose? Flasche gibt’s aber nur kleine.

Maxi Haug als Musiknerd zu betiteln, wäre, wie zu sagen, das Krümelmonster findet Kekse ganz in Ordnung (Erklärung: Es wäre untertrieben).

Natürlich liegt zuhause in Mannheim in ihrer 25qm Einzimmerwohnung die aktuelle, junge Generation großartiger amerikanischer Songwriter*innen wie Julien Baker oder Phoebe Bridgers auf dem Plattenspieler, aber Riot Grrrl spielt eine genauso große Rolle in der musikalischen Entwicklung Beers’ – sowie die Suzanne Vega Kassette, die früher immer in dem Auto der Mutter lief, oder nineties Grunge/Punkbands wie Babes in Toyland, Hole oder 7 Year Bitch.

Achja, Maxi HASST auch richtig, richtig viel Musik.

Der Slow Club wird über den gesamten Abend rauchfrei sein.

Die Veranstaltung findet unter der 1G-Regelung statt.

Das heißt, dass für alle unsere Veranstaltungen der Zutritt nur mit negativen Schnelltest (nur von anerkannter Teststelle, max. 24 Stunden alt) oder PCR-Test (nur von anerkannter Teststelle, max 48 Stunden alt) gilt.

Egal ob geboostert, geimpft, genesen oder ungeimpft.

Personen ohne einen entsprechenden Nachweis werden nicht an unseren Veranstaltungen teilnehmen können, ebenso Personen mit Symptomen. Der Test-Nachweis ist nur gültig in Verbindung mit einem Lichtbildausweis. 

Es gibt keine Maskenpflicht mehr, diese sind bei uns jedoch nach wie vor willkommen!
