Brunch by the Richten25 collective

A meeting point for the artists is where storytelling, archives, poetry, lived experience and oral history weave together with music and sound. What difference does it make to narrate through music, and how do sound and stories come together.

Both artists look forward to exploring songs and approaches from their upcoming albums.

Knistern describes a crackling sound, and is also a metaphor for something that’s in the air between people, be it a crush or an argument. Something invisible that makes the relational space vibrate and spark. Something magical, intangible and not to be pinned down that is happening in the moment of relation to each other. 

The series Knistern each time brings together two artists and a musical idea they are currently working on. They present their current work in a short set, and then have space to share their musical ideas in conversation with each other, a music journalist, and the audience. What happens in the space between the two artistic approaches, and what happens between people in the room in the conversation? And also, what happens between the sound and the review, the thinking, the tuning in, the conversation? 

Knistern takes place in collaboration with Richten25, project space for improvised music in Berlin Wedding. What we also like about the idea of knistern is that it’s contingent and ephemeral. It lives in the present, and something amazing may come out, or maybe it’s just a brief moment in time.

Artist Bios

Otis Mensah is a British-born, Berlin-based experimental music artist working under a Jazz and Abstract Rap fusion. Otis’ music navigates thematically and sonically between landscapes of utopia and dystopia over multilayered, jazz-infused soundscapes. Otis’ work takes narrative form to delve into dreaming, displacement and notions of Blackness and Black-art aesthetics. At the core, their songs portray the beauty and struggles of reimagining a relationship to self, the body and the city. Otis cites Pharoah Sanders and Beverly Glenn-Copeland as inspirations to their work; experimenting with cadence, timing and phonetics as the leading instrument into emotive and daring songwriting.

Nour Sokhon - Based between Beirut and Berlin, Nour Sokhon works across sound, performance, installation, and moving image. She works with artistic research including interview material, field recordings and recorded material from organized site specific interventiona. She received the Sursock Museum Emerging Artist Prize (2019) and the Sound Art 2020 scholarship from HBK. Her debut album Beirut Birds was released on aural conduct with AFAC’s support, and is a sonic memory capsule honoring (inter)personal stories of migration, displacement, and the cyclical turbulent circumstances in Lebanon.

Jumoke Adeyanju ist eine preisgekrönte Kuratorin, Linguistin, Tänzerin, Autorin und interdisziplinäre Künstlerin. 2014 gründete sie Poetry Meets, eine Plattform, die seitdem deutschlandweit sowie u. a. in Brasilien, Kenia, Ghana, Nigeria und Jordanien stattfand. Neben Poetry Meets ist sie Mitkuratorin von Sensi.Dance und YAASAA, war Panel Lead Moderatorin für MUBI Deutschland und moderiert seit 2021 Radioshows auf Refuge Worldwide. Unter ihrem Pseudonym mokeyanju tritt sie gelegentlich als Klangkünstlerin auf und verbindet Sound, Bewegung und Poesie zu immersiven Erlebnissen; ihre Arbeiten wurden u. a. im Kölnischen Kunstverein, auf der Dakar Biennale und bei LagosPhoto gezeigt. Sie hat Vorträge an der CUNY, der Universität Nairobi und der SOAS gehalten und über Fanon, Nekropolitik sowie die Schnittstellen von Kunst, Bildungswesen und Widerstandsbewegungen gelehrt. Sie schreibt und übersetzt auf Englisch, Deutsch, Kiswahili und Yorùbá.

Die Artists treffen sich dort, wo das Erzählen von Geschichten, Poetry, Oral History und Musik zusammenkommen. Wie sind Songs auch Archive und tragen Erfahrungen weiter? Wie verweben sich Erzählung und Sound ästhetisch und beeinflussen sich gegenseitig? Welchen Unterschied macht es, eine Erzählung in einen Song zu übertragen, mit Rhythmus, Timing und Phonetik als Instrumente? Wir sind gespannt auf die Vielschichtigkeit, mit Songs und Musik zu erzählen, wenn es nicht nur darum geht, Liedtexte zu schreiben, sondern Erzählung und Musik wirklich zusammenzudenken. Auch Fragen zu mündlicher Überlieferung durch Songs interessieren uns hier. 

Sowohl Otis als auch Nour arbeiten gerade an ihren neuen Alben und nutzen den Knistern Raum, um künstlerische Ideen vor und mit Publikum auszuprobieren. Nour Sokhon z.B plant sich mit Stimme und Erzählkunst auseinanderzusetzen und das Publikum in Echtzeit in die Songentwicklung einzubeziehen und durch kollektive Interaktion Ideen für ihr neues Album zu erproben. 

KNISTERN bringt musikalische Ideen und Ansätze in Resonanz und Austausch miteinander - zunächst ästhetisch in einer Performance, und anschließend in einem moderierten Gespräch. Die Reihe gibt Künstler*innen Raum, um musikalische Ideen und inhaltlichen Kontext von Musik zu teilen. Sie gibt Raum für prozesshaftes Arbeiten und Ausprobieren und Verhandeln von künstlerischen Ideen vor Publikum. Sie bringt Musikdiskurs in einen sozialen Raum, in dem die Musik zunächst gemeinsam erfahren und dann besprochen wird. 

KNISTERN findet in Community Atmosphäre Sonntag nachmittags statt. Wir öffnen um 12:00 zum Brunch, vorbereitet vom Richten25 Kollektiv; Essen, Kaffee/Tee und weitere Getränke sind den ganzen Nachmittag erhältlich. Die Performances beginnen pünktlich um 13:00.
