Editing War: Documentary Perspectives on the Russian Invasion of Ukraine
Europe’s largest and bloodiest military conflict since World War II shows no sign of ending. The Russian invasion of Ukraine has become the subject of hundreds of documentaries, many of which have been screened at renowned film festivals worldwide. Quite often the film editors of these documentaries don’t have Ukrainian or Russian roots themselves, but become increasingly emotionally invested in the churning intensity of their work.
The panel brings together three editors with varying degrees of experience in this field. Kasia Boniecka has worked on Ukraine-themed documentaries since 2014, shortly after the annexation of Crimea, and is currently editing her fifth war-related film. Charlotte Tourrès and Inés Boffi only recently worked on their first Ukraine documentaries, but have previously edited other films dealing with war and conflict, e.g. about Afghanistan. All three faced questions and challenges during the editing process, relating to viewpoint, framing, propaganda, ethics and personal stance – while also trying to take care of their mental health.
Panel guests:
Kasia Boniecka, Poland
Charlotte Tourrès, France
Inés Boffi, Argentina / Spain
Moderator: Dietmar Kraus
The panel will be in English.
