chucuchucu + AlterLatinX pres.: Desenfreno Tropical + mrReed + Superzona

This January 10th Import Export hosts a night dedicated to tropicanibalismo: a radical and playful approach to Latin American tropical music that feeds on its own roots, reimagining them through experimentation, irony, and dance.

Originating in Bogotá, far from the Caribbean coast, tropicanibalismo blends traditional rhythms such as cumbia and vallenato with psychedelia, electronic music, rock, and experimental sounds. Often described as “high-altitude tropical music,” it embraces an anachronistic perspective: coastal rhythms recreated from the mountains, nostalgic and futuristic at once. As coined by its creators, tropicanibalismo is about “eating ourselves musically”: digesting tradition to produce something new, vibrant, and alive.

This movement has been shaped and represented by bands that Import Export has already had the pleasure of presenting, such as Frente Cumbiero, Romperayo, and Chúpame el Dedo: projects that embody the genre’s irreverent spirit and its constant dialogue between tradition and experimentation.

At the center of the night is Desenfreno Tropical (Düsseldorf/Cologne), a newly formed band devoted to the search for the lost spirit of festivity. Their music explores the ritual dimension of celebration, combining Latin American traditions with tropical rhythms and global influences such as avant-garde jazz, electronic music, and psychedelic rock. The result is an interdisciplinary and experimental sound that remains deeply physical and danceable.

The live concert will be framed by DJ sets by Superzona and mrReed, both from the collectives AlterLatinX and chucuchucu: the same crew behind formats such as Descarga Tropical and Cumbia de los Muertos. Together, they curate a night conceived as a homage to the original sounds of Latin America, from cumbia and chucu-chucu to their contemporary, mutated forms.
